Saizen

Human Growth Hormone

Saizen is subcutaneous or intramuscular injection containing somatropins, also known as Human Growth Hormone (HGH). Saizen is prescribed to some fertility patients to help stimulate follicle growth and egg maturation....

Administration

Step 1: Gather your supplies, and wash your hands

  1. You will need: a 5mg or 8.8mg vial of Saizen powder (depends on your prescription), a vial of sterile diluent, a TB syringe (syringe with a fine needle), a 27 gauge 1 and ¼ needle (if you have been told to do this injection intramuscularly), alcohol pads, and sharps disposal.
Step 2: Draw up your dose

  1. Using the TB syringe, pull on the plunger to take air equal to the amount of diluent prescribed into the syringe. Insert the needle into the vial of sterile diluent and expel the air. Then invert the vial and take the prescribed amount of diluent into the syringe. Withdraw the needle.
  2. Insert the needle into the vial of Saizen powder and expel the diluent. Swirl to dissolve.
  3. Invert the vial and the prescribed amount into the syringe.
  4. Note: the amount of diluent and medication your draw up will change depending on what protocol you are on and what dose your vial of Saizen contains.
Step 3: Prep your needle

  1. If you are going to take Saizen as an intramuscular injection, switch to the 27 gauge 1 and ¼ needle. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  2. With the needle pointing up, tap the barrel of the syringe and gently push on the plunger to clear all the air out of the syringe.
Step 4: Pick your injection site

  1. If you are doing an intramuscular injection, the best place to administer this injection is in the upper left or right butt cheek. You can switch off sides to reduce soreness. Clean the site with an alcohol pad and let air dry.
  2. If you are doing a subcutaneous injection, pick a spot about 1-2 inches away from your belly button. When you find a spot, clean using an alcohol pad and let air dry.
Step 5: Administer the injection

  1. If intramuscular, holding the skin taught, hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle and insert it all the way in your skin. Push down on the plunger until all of the medication is gone and then count to five. Withdraw the needle.
  2. If subcutaneous, take a pinch of skin around your injection site and hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle. Steadily, push the needle all the way in and release your pinch of skin. Push the plunger down until all of the medication is gone. Then withdraw the needle.

  3. Dispose of your syringe in your sharps disposal. You did it!
