Ovidrel is a medication containing Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) used to induce ovulation once follicle growth in the ovaries is satisfactory. Ovidrel is a single subcutaneous injection using a pre-filled syringe and can be referred to as your “trigger shot”. It is essential that this shot be taken precisely at the time prescribed by your doctor to ensure that your egg retrieval procedure can proceed as planned. hCG is a hormone that is used in assisted reproductive treatments to cause final follicular maturation and ovulation. This will be prescribed once a patient has achieved the desired follicle growth in her ovaries due to the gonadotropin medications like Menopur and Gonal-F. Once ovulation occurs, your treatment can continue with intrauterine insemination or egg retrieval, depending on the protocol you have discussed with your doctor.
Administration
Step 1: Gather your supplies, and wash your hands

- You will need: Ovidrel pre-filled syringe with needle, alcohol pads and a sharps disposal.
Step 2: Prep your needle

- Remove the needle cap and with it pointing up, tap the barrel of the syringe and push on the plunger until a small droplet of liquid appears on the needle tip.
Step 3: Pick your injection site

- Measure 1-2 inches below your belly button and off to the right or left. Switch sides with each injection to help relieve any tenderness that develops. Using an alcohol wipe, wipe off your chosen spot and let it air dry.
Step 4: Administer the injection

- Take a pinch of skin around your injection site and hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle. Steadily, push the needle all the way in and release your pinch of skin. Push the plunger down until all of the medication is gone. Then withdraw the needle.
Dispose of the syringe in the sharp disposal and apply pressure to the injection site to stop any bleeding that might occur. You did it!
