First things first, when it comes to your reproductive health and supporting your fertility, there is no one magic pill. Your supplement routine should be as unique as you are.
Having a healthy body is essential when it comes to your period, your fertility status, and creating the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. There are lots of important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that you need to make sure you’re taking to stay healthy from the inside, out.
Here are the supplements that you should consider taking daily when trying to conceive:
1. Folate
Folate, or folic acid, plays a crucial role in your reproductive health. It can be found naturally in some foods, but over 50% of women still do not reach the recommended daily amount. That’s where supplementation comes in.
You’ve probably heard that all women who are actively trying or pregnant need to be taking folic acid. Folic acid works within the body to help prevent neural tube defects, miscarriage, and other birth defects like spina bifida.
At Binto, we use methylated folate, which is folic acid in its most active form.
2. Vitamin D
Beyond helping with our cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, and bone health and growth, Vitamin D also plays a major role in reproduction.
Vitamin D acts as a receptor on ovaries and the uterus, and can actually affect the genes within cells to turn them on and off. This includes the cells in your body that produce estrogen, which contributes to the successful implantation of an embryo in the uterus.
Studies show increased pregnancy and implantation rates in women with higher levels of Vitamin D, so it’s truly a key player when it comes to fertility and successful pregnancy outcomes.
3. DHA
Another supplement to look for is DHA/EPA, or omega-3 fatty acids. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is critical for your brain health, and also helps support a healthy brain for your baby.
DHA is found naturally in fish, nuts, and seeds, but many women still do not get the recommended daily dosage through diet alone. This is why we recommend that women add DHA as a daily supplement.
DHA can also help decrease inflammation throughout your body, which helps promote a healthy pregnancy.
At Binto, we offer two different DHA supplements, one is a vegan, algae-based capsule, and the other is a fish oil with a higher dosage. We can work with you to decide which is right for your needs.
4. NAC
NAC, or N-acetyl-cysteine, is great for women who are trying to conceive naturally or via IUI. It helps to lower insulin in the body and thin cervical mucus, creating an easier path for sperm to pass through and reach the egg to fertilize.
We also recommend NAC to women who are diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), as it decreases the male hormones in the body and helps support healthy ovulation.
Finally, NAC works to produce antioxidants that fight off free radicals in the body that can negatively impact your fertility.
5. CoQ10
CoQ10 helps the reproductive system function more efficiently, by increasing energy levels within our cells.
CoQ10 is found naturally in the body within our cells, including the cells of an egg. Though there are few studies of CoQ10 in humans, we do know that natural CoQ10 levels in our bodies decline with age. Age is also the only real predictor of fertility in women, so it is important to add this supplement into your routine to keep CoQ10 levels up and to support healthy egg growth.
It also works like an antioxidant (like NAC) by lowering the impact of free radicals in our system.
6. Probiotics
Did you know that your gut is the doorway to overall health in your body? We love probiotics because they help restore healthy gut bacteria, keep us regular, improve emotional wellness, and create a healthy foundation for pregnancy.
We recommend that women take probiotics before, during, and after pregnancy, as probiotics also work to create a healthy gut and foundation for your baby.
Binto’s probiotics are made especially for women with strains that support healthy gut and vaginal flora.
These are the six supplements that we at BINTO recommend most for fertility and the ones that have proven to be the most effective for women. Of course, everybody is different, so it’s important to speak to your health care provider to determine your specific needs when trying to conceive.
